Arizona Statewide Economic Study 2002
Part 1: Economic Base Study and Special Reports
What is an Economic Base Study?
An economic base study is a description of an economy's structure and composition. Regional economic theory states that a local economy is driven by economic activities that import money into the region through the sales of goods and services to customers who do not live in the region. The purpose of the economic base study is to identify an area's leading economic activities - export activities that are significantly larger in the county, region or state than in the nation.
In contrast, an economic impact analysis considers how industries interact, including an analysis of suppliers and customers. Impact analyses are conducted for individual events, companies or industries, not for an entire economy. Impact analyses are information intensive, requiring the cooperation of the company or industry for which they are performed since so much of the information needed is not publicly available. Impact analyses usually require a series of assumptions since they frequently attempt to assess future impacts. Economic impact analysis therefore was not included in the Statewide Economic Study.
